How do I upgrade my Handline™ brand nozzle?

Upgrading your TFT handline nozzle boosts performance, brings flow into NFPA compliance, enables compatibility with new color-coded grips, and adds a new 5-year warranty. This guide walks you through identifying upgrade eligibility and step-by-step installation of the front and back components in the upgrade kit.

The TFT Handline Upgrade Kit modernizes your legacy nozzle with a new front end, updated flow control design, and more ergonomic features. It fits models manufactured between 1985 and 2003, provided the back end is in good condition. This guide covers full disassembly, component replacement, and reassembly.

Why Upgrade?

  • ✔ Achieve NFPA flow compliance

  • ✔ Install new color-coded handle grips

  • ✔ Receive a 5-year warranty with the upgraded nozzle

  • ✔ Maintain performance with a flatter, more consistent flow curve

Step 1: Confirm Upgrade Compatibility

  • Look up your nozzle’s serial number at tft.com to check eligibility.

  • Units manufactured between 1985–2003 are generally upgradeable.

  • Inspect the back end of the nozzle for wear:

    • If the valve disc is lifted, warped, or damaged, it must be serviced by TFT before upgrading.

What’s in the Upgrade Kit?

  • New front end

  • New bail handle

  • Screws, springs, and balls (extras included)

  • Loctite vial

  • New TFT label

  • Printed instructions

Step 2: Replace the Bail Handle (Rear Section)

1. Remove Old Handle

  • Heat may be needed to loosen factory Loctite on screws.

  • Remove button head and safety screws from both sides.

  • Carefully lift off handle; capture springs and balls.

2. Prep New Handle

  • Insert one spring into each side pocket.

  • Use light grease to hold each ball in place above the spring.

3. Install New Handle

  • Position the curvature toward the rear of the nozzle.

  • Slide handle over the valve body so balls seat in detents.

4. Secure Screws

  • Apply Loctite around threads.

  • Install safety screw until it contacts slider, then back off half a turn.

  • Fully tighten button head screw.

  • Repeat for both sides.

Step 3: Replace the Front End

1. Remove Old Front End

  • Use a 3/32" Allen wrench to back out the two set screws.

  • Unscrew and remove the nozzle’s front section.

2. Inspect & Lubricate

  • Ensure the slider is clean and undamaged.

  • Lubricate the O-rings and slider with a light coat of grease.

3. Install New Front End

  • Thread in until the white plastic shutoff disc contacts the slider.

  • Open bail handle, rotate slightly further to align flow indicator line.

  • Tighten set screws evenly—alternate to prevent misalignment or leaking.

Final Checks

  • Ensure full open/close travel of the bail handle.

  • Nozzle should fully detent in closed position.

  • Add water to back end to confirm a tight shutoff seal.

Step 4: Apply New Label

  • Scrape off the old label and clean the surface.

  • Apply new label in the same position and press flat.

Step 5: Submit the Warranty Card

  • Complete the old serial number and the new serial number from your upgraded nozzle.

  • Return to TFT to activate your 5-year warranty.
